The first battery gigafactory in Slovakia will be located in Šurany on a 95-hectare area and will create thousands of jobs. In the initial development stage, it will have a capacity of 20 GWh with the further potential to reach a capacity of up to 40 GWh.
The government and joint venture have now signed an Investment Agreement. The agreement does not come as a surprise. In November 2023, the companies signed a letter of intent to this effect with the Slovakian government regarding the factory. The partners had already presented the key points of the joint factory in September.
Denisa Sakova, Slovakia's economy minister, said in a statement that the country could shine again on the map of countries with technologically advanced industries because of the investment. Sakova said battery production will go hand in hand with Slovakia's tradition of automotive manufacturing.
The news came after Gotion said in September that it aims to build a battery plant in Middle Europe with Inobat, of which it has acquired a 25% strategic stake. According to the MoU signed on Wednesday, GIB plans to begin constructing the factory in 2024. The Slovak government will offer subsidies to the project and arrange the land.
